is early realism works are something special. The transitional pieces that were done around the time that he showed at the Yellow Bird Art Gallery on Belmont in SE Portland, he was influenced by some of the Haitian pieces that were in there as well. The next series of paintings were exceptional, but where he has gone with it all 14 years later is something else!!
Good to see that you are still at it Matt.

Thanks so much Calvin and team! You were the first friendly faces we met in Portland, and your documentation, encouragement, and dedication to trekking out to every dingy little pop-up space Portland threw at you helped us all. Best of luck in your new endeavors.

LOVE

Dang..those of us up-the-hill in Seattle are really going to miss out. Openwide gave such a great snapshot of what was happening across Portland.

Oh no!
I have to say, that even with sporadic updates and uneven coverage Openwide was ever my single favorite web resource for the visual arts in Portland. Hands down. The original intent may have been to document and archive shows, but for visitors like me its value in offering a preview or enticement to go out and see a particular show in person was completely unique and completely effective. You guys did a really great job and it's a shame to see it end.

And I wouldn't at all characterize the format's lack of "critical response" as a liability. Just the opposite. Posting just photos alone (even imperfect snapshots) showed a real respect for the art and its ability to speak for itself — any editorializing would have ruined the effect. God knows there is no shortage of art educators, gallery publicists, museum workers, curators, critics, and endless other culture industry blabbermouths who are more than eager to get between you and a painting. Having a place to survey contemporary works in silence was a real treat.

Here's hoping some enterprising person recognizes the value of what you've done and builds on it now to fill the void. It would mean an awful lot to all of Portland's artists, art lovers, and arts organizations. Anyway, thanks, congratulations, and good luck.
